Biografía y Trayectoria

Saúl Álvarez-Teijeiro, PhD in Cancer Research from the University of Oviedo (2017), has developed a scientific career focused on tumor biology, with a particular emphasis on tumor–stroma interactions and the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in head and neck cancer (HNC).

He currently leads the Maxillofacial Oncology research group at the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA), an ISCIII-accredited Health Research Institute, and is a member of the Respiratory Tract Tumors Program at CIBERONC (CB16/12/00390). His research aims to dissect the complexity of the tumor microenvironment and its impact on cancer progression and treatment resistance, with a strong focus on the functional and molecular characterization of CAFs. His group combines patient-derived models, proteomic analyses, and digital pathology to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. A key line of his research also involves the development of non-invasive biomarkers in saliva using mass spectrometry-based proteomics for liquid biopsy in oral cancer.

Dr. Álvarez-Teijeiro has participated in multiple national and international research projects and has served as principal investigator in several competitive grants throughout his career, including both national and regional funding programs. He is the author of over 35 peer-reviewed publications and has supervised several Master’s students and one ongoing PhD thesis.

El Dr. Toledo ha publicado más de 50 artículos en revistas peer-reviewed, incluyendo *JAMA Oncology* y *Clinical Cancer Research*. Es revisor habitual de diversas revistas científicas internacionales y participa activamente en congresos internacionales.
