Silvia Calabuig Fariñas
PhD, Hospital Universitario XBiografía y Trayectoria
Silvia Calabuig Fariñas holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology (2003) from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, with a specialization in Cell Biology and Genetics, and a PhD in Biology (2009) from the Universitat de València, where she focused her doctoral research on gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and mutations in c-KIT/PDGFRα.
She is currently a lecturer in the Unit of Biology, Department of Pathology at the Universitat de València, and leads the emerging BLOOP group (Liquid Biopsy in Oncology for Optimization and Precision in Solid Tumors). She is also coordinator of the Liquid Biopsy Section at the Molecular Oncology Laboratory (eOM Group), Fundación de Investigación del Hospital General Universitario de Valencia. Silvia is a member of the CIBERONC Respiratory Tract Tumors program and participates in its transversal working groups on Liquid Biopsy and Experimental Models.
Over the past decade, she has gained extensive expertise in the field of liquid biopsy, particularly in the application of different methodologies such as digital PCR and next-generation sequencing (NGS) for precision oncology.
She has contributed to the development and standardization of preanalytical protocols for cfDNA to the ISO 15189 accreditation of eOM laboratory for plasma-based liquid biopsy testing. Her research has focused primarily on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), encompassing both early and advanced stages, including work on tumor mutation profiling, resistance mechanisms to targeted therapies, and immune response biomarkers. Her work also extends to breast cancer, melanoma, sarcomas, and rare CNS tumors, with active participation in national and European consortia on biomarker discovery.
She has taken part in numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects, including TRANSCAN, EuroNanoMed, and HORIZON-MSCA. She has authored 74 peer-reviewed international publications, 35 in the first quartile (Q1), and holds an H-index of 27 with over 2,200 citations. She maintains a strong collaborative network within the academic and clinical research communities.
